Who is a good LASIK Candidate?

Even though LASIK has provided millions of people will clear, hassle-free vision, not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK. The experienced refractive surgeons at Houston Ophthalmology Associates will only recommend LASIK for the very best candidates. If you have determined that you meet the basic LASIK requirements presented below, you can take the LASIK SELF EVALUATION QUESTIONAIRE to further determine if you are a candidate for laser vision correction.

MINIMUM  REQUIREMENTS  FOR  LASIK                                                        

  • – Nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism
  • – Over the age of 18
  • – Vision has been stable for 2-3 years
  • – No current eye problems
  • – No health issues that may affect the eyes

Each eye is unique and that it is why it is extremely important to have your eyes examined by a board-certified ophthalmologist at HOA prior to undergoing a LASIK procedure. During your LASIK evaluation you will undergo some tests to determine your candidacy including:

  • – Glasses and contact lens history review
  • – Complete review of overall eye health
  • – Measurement of pupil size
  • – Measurement of corneal thickness
  • – Measurement of refractive errors
  • – Custom LASIK measurement for higher order aberrations
  • Dry eye test
  • – Dilation of the eye to view the retina

After completing your LASIK evaluation exam the surgeon will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK. If for any reason you do not qualify for LASIK they will recommend one of the many other possible vision correction procedures offered at the Houston Ophthalmology Associates. These can include:

  • – Advanced Surface Ablation (PRK)
  • – LASEK
  • – Epi-LASIK
  • – Intra-Ocular Phakic IOL Implants ( ICL or the Verisys IOL )
  • Lens extraction and Inrtaocular lens (IOL)  Implantation
  • – Continuation of glasses or contact lenses in some cases
